Depicting an air flow
Murmurations is the name given to the flocks that certain birds form in the sky. The skies above Lyon are crossed by regular, seasonal flows of migratory birds, some of which still stop off — briefly — in the city. The Rhône Valley is a continental-scale ecological corridor, connecting diverse habitats from northern Europe to the Sahelian regions. Nelson Mandela Park forms part of this network.
Murmurations consists of two installations positioned on either side of the BRT tracks. At their top, birds with wings formed from a multitude of colourful touches are depicted in a series of flight poses. Each bird is unique, slightly distorted, as if its movement were suspended. The curvature of the poles, the surface effects and the dotted colouring all contribute to this feeling of floating.
Across the transport network, Murmurations becomes a subtle reflection of human flows: passengers, travellers, people in transit. The project seeks to establish a subtle connection between these different modes of travel.
This project was carried out as part of a public commission by SYTRAL for the new BRT line, designed in collaboration with Bureau des projets and Studio Idaë. Project management and artistic direction for the client: Maison Gutenberg.
